Attention LiveJournal readers

LJ is screwing up the fetching of my blog for some reason. I’ve made some changes to the feed which hopefully should fix this. Sorry for spamming you!

Question Period Podcast

The Canadian Parliamentary Access Channel (CPAC) is now providing a daily podcast of Question Period.

Of course, there won’t be any question periods for a few weeks, but it is a great idea!

Happy 2nd Birthday cmh blog

Two years and still going. Last year I promised an entry about why I like blogging. This year, I’m just telling you that I like it, and no entry justifying this position will be forthcoming.

However, a celebratory picture is in order:

Back to School

I like Gayla’s Making Happy thoughts on back-to-school vs. the new year.

Also check out the great photo she’s paired the entry with.

Blog Contract

Coming soon to a cmh blog near you:

  • On Making Mistakes
  • Tulips Photoblog (shots are pretty good)
Jen’s Blog Syndicating

My partner Jen’s blog is now syndicating onto LiveJournal as: [ljuser]jensplanet

She’s been posting about the chemistry of food recently, but recent topics have also included the Unix command line, perl, boogie boarding, beaches, narcissism and Buddhism. So yeah. Read it.

I have decided that her personal motto should be “I’m thinking about it”. This is because it perfectly sums up the fact that she likes to research her interests extensively, and also because she likes to carefully consider new courses of action before acting (although this sometimes frustrates me when I want her to do something). The problem is that I really need to figure out what this motto is in Latin! All good mottos are in Latin… Although perhaps a Gaelic one would be more appropriate.

Happy Birthday cmh blog

Well, as of 11pm last night cmh blog is one year old.

Perhaps I will find the time soon for a little blog introspection about the blogging process and why I think it’s a good thing.

For now:

LiveJournal Syndication

For the pleasure of those livejournal users who have, until now, needed to read my blog on orange-carb.org, I have syndicated it onto the livejournal site as [info]cmhblog.

Apologies to those who already knew this, and for whom this update probably constitutes a spam.

Fixed links

Good news for those surfing with Netscape and other browsers that (correctly) barf on URLs containing spaces/ampersands. I’ve fixed my directories to avoid these nasties, and so the ‘See Also’ links in longer stories should now work for you.

After a long hiatus, this article marks the return of secret links… I’m giving this one away because it’s so good… and to remind you to be on the lookout!

Smaller Page

I’ve reduced the number of items that appear on this page to 20. You can access older entries from the Archive section on the left, or narrow your view to a category to see only the 20 most recent items in that category. (Most have less than 20 right now.) The look of the individual category pages is a bit weird still, but it is serviceable.

Change to categories

I’ve recategorized everything in the blog. In the old scheme pretty much everything was jammed together in a Life category. That wasn’t doing anyone any good.

The new categories are inspired by Trivial Pursuit, but I’ve made a few changes to accomodate the types of items I tend to post. Hover your mouse over one of the icons if you are having trouble figuring out what the category is actually supposed to be called.

Comments please!

I’ve added the capability to comment on my blog entries, and I’m hoping you’ll feel inspired to add your comments to my stories. You can see how many comments there are for a story by glancing at the bottom right of that story. To view the comments, or add your own, just click on the story title, or right on the “…2 comments” line. I’m looking forward to this blog becoming a two-way street.

Secret Links
Just for fun, I’m putting “hidden” links into some blog entries. If you put your mouse over some words, you’ll notice that it underlines. Click to be rewarded with a link to something I found on google as a cute, if only tangentially related link.

Round Corners!
I spent far too long trying to force HTML to make these round cornered boxes. My problem was that I wanted to use a rowspan to make the content space, instead of using a top and bottom margin. Emily found this altogether too funny.

This blog needs to stop being so much template, and start having more content.
