Concentration of the Media

I know this blog has been trending toward the political issues lately, and I’m loath to continue the trend, but I’ve got something I think is good.

It’s the upcoming report on the media from the senate. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: a healthy democracy depends on a large and healthy media that features several points of view. That means that you need independent editorial boards and independent news gathering.

Happily, the senate agrees with me and will say we need independent news sources in every market. Yeah. Go senate!

Of course, we’ve ignored royal commission reports in the past, so I won’t hold my breath. Still, it’s nice to see that someone up there is thinking about these issues…

ah the media...

i watched (with pat) a documentary about fox nexs a couple of weeks ago (it was called Out Foxed) interesting stuff about Rupert Murdoch's New Corporation... you should check it out...
also, i read recently that Murdoch purchased MySpace.com. giving him a market of over 70 million users (not to mention 200 million bucks a year in profits)
scary stuff...

suppression of views?

Have you noticed that solicitation of comments from opposition parties has fallen off dramatically at the CBC? Why do we not hear the CBC asking for the views of Jack Layton, Gilles Duceppe and Bill Graham about the Middle East crisis? Why did the CBC interviewer on the Current attempt to drown out comments from an NDP MP on the subject last week? Could it be that the CBC is being held hostage by the Harper people? This is rather scary.
