Numa Numa Dance

Well, us over-thirty types have to accept the fact that we are a bit behind the curve from a socio-cultural perspective. Doubtless many faithful readers will not realize that the innocuous-sounding title of this article would return about 98 700 results if submitted to Google.

All you readers are therefore excused for not knowing that the Numa Numa dance concerns a young american who is so enamoured with his favorite Romanian dance track that he has produced a webcam video featuring himself enjoying this track to its fullest. While some feel he is making an ass of himself, I think he looks like he’s having a great time — I love it.

If someone sees Rob, they should force him to watch it as the guy’s moves are very reminiscent of Rob’s while he’s playing with those dancing games for the PS2.

Introduced to the phenomenon by [ljuser]basking_lizard I went to play it for Chris this morning and found her link was broken. Highly concerned I then spent over 2 hours (I am not making this up) looking for the exact version her link was to. You see there are two main versions of the video out there, and neither was the one I was looking for.

Gotcha interested? Here’s a link I finally found to the Numa Numa Dance (flash player required). And yes, I did save a copy this time.

Now, those of you who believe that I would be sated of googling after a two hour search for an american kid dancing in his dorm room to a romanian song that sounds little better than the old mod files I used to enjoy have another think coming. I present to you the highlights of other Numa Numa animations:

Phew. That’s a lotta Numa Numa.

And in case the song is getting stuck in your head, the guy has slowed it down a touch, it’s called Dragostea Din Tei. There seems to be some disagreement about who wrote it, but the recording used is by O-Zone. An mp3 is available for download here.

Rock on Numa Numa

Yes- I love the Numa Numa. I'm not sure about the other versions- except for the super cute Israeli music video. That was also really great!

Numa Meme

Also- I meant to add- I told Alia that I think we should all do our own video recordings of the Numa Numa dance, with the moves exactly like the guy in the original Numa Numa Dance, thus perpetuating the Numa Numa dance- a bit like the infinite cat idea. Or maybe a group Numa Numa dance? Okay. Now I have to go watch the video of people doing the live action version of the Kenya! Kenya! song. I love this stuff.

whee!

I can't get the lego one to work on my machine. :P But I did manage to discover that 'numa' is 'sleep' in Hebrew. :)

The think I think is kind of neat about the two Japanese ones and the Israeli one is that they take the Romanian (?) words and bring them directly over to that language or to English, which results in some cute sight gags (like the guy sleeping, and then sitting up in bed). It makes me wish I knew more of both of those languages, so I could get the rest of the funny.

Also, I'm going to go fix my link.

their names, i missed 4

The blonde woman in white is Orna Datz, the man making tea is her husband Moshe (‘Datz oseh li teh’). They are considered the #1 singing duo in Israel, and were the Israeli representatives in the 1991 Eurovision song contest. The balding man is Tuvia Tzafir, a comedian and actor who has made several children's videos. The man who is coughing in the middle of the trio is Oded Menashe, a children's actor. The two guys flanking Oded while he coughs are Harel Ska'at and Harel Moyal, actors. Then there is Roni Douani. The girl in the dark pink dress that Tuvia sings at through the bullhorn is Agam Rodberg, an actress. The two girls with dark hair are Maya Buskila and Ninette Teib.

They were the cast of Kochvei Pestigal 2004, a children's show (referred to as ‘mofa' shel yeladim’) for Chanukah, for which Numa Numa was the theme song.
