Holiday Report: Tasty Food

Well, I have been debating about how to best sum up the holiday, and I have come up with the idea of a photoblog entry surrounding the wonderful food items we’ve been able to consume over the last few weeks. After all, how better to recount the holidays than by revisiting those great meals spent in good company.

And right here, above the cut, as a holiday food teaser, I present a lobster shot. Don’t miss the lobster portraits inside folks… I know you’re thinking now about how much you’ve always wondered what a lobster looks like right up close. Well you’re about to find out…

Well there cannot be a family celebration at our house without a documentary photo of the event. And here it is folks, a giant bird with 5 hungry people (plus a hungry photographer) at Christmas at my parents’ place. A great meal, Mum did not forget to serve the stuffing, and a good time was had by all. We played Cranium after the food which. I believe, was extremely successful. But oh, the desserts…

Moving on to the 27th… Every year now for many years I have hosted an event called Post Christmas Christmas. This event was born of the realisation that we want to celebrate with friends as well as with family. Every year I invite close friends to eat on a day between Christmas and New Year’s. The problem is that (as with many of these events) the circle keeps increasing. And some friends insist on reproducing now have lovely children, making the circle even wider :)

So, what do you do when you discover that you’ve invited 18 adults (16 carnivores and 2 vegetarians) and 5 children to Christmas dinner in your two bedroom apartment? Well, you cook a roast of beef the night before, and turkey the day of. And you make Chickpea stew and Thai curry and all the fixings for everything. (My friends, do not attempt this without a detailed burner plan™.) How much roast beef do you need? Well, you clearly would not want to listen to your partner in this regard… 3 kilos is the perfect size according to me! Er… perhaps that was a little much.

I actually wasn’t too stressed this year. And that was a good thing because the oven was set a bit fast and the turkey was done early. Everything worked out however, and as you can see we destroyed the turkey. We did not destroy the roast. We barely made a dent in it and several guests were “forced” to take some home.

Like parents like son, you MUST have a photo of everyone. Jen took this one and it is fantastic. (Except of Chris who looks asleep. Although he may have been; doesn’t turkey have a soporific chemical in it?)

Quick time out from the food pictures for our tree picture. A tree which I understand I technically stole from the lot down the street. (I did pay for it, and it was after Christmas… I just tucked some money into the door of the little booth. Surely that’s ok right? They were just going to have to chip the tree up anyway…)

On from Post Christmas Christmas (there are some cute people pics but I’ll post those later on) to Halifax for Post Post Christmas Christmas Christmas. We went to Halifax for a winter celebration and the New Year. And what greets us there? But TASTY FOOD. Yes folks, I love seafood. And there is plenty of seafood there! Here’s the groaning table for the oil fondue with scallops, shrimp and seabeef.

After a pleasing (if allergenic) stay in Halifax we went down to Jen’s parents’ beach house on the south shore. There we spent a few very relaxing days and enjoyed… great food!. The photographic theme of the trip was depth of field and these oranges were willing subjects for practise:

And now, ladies and gentlemen, the moment you’ve all been waiting for, the LOBSTER PORTRAITS!

And then we ate them. And they were good. But man, do those things not look like little space aliens? I love the little bony visors they have.

There are plenty more beach photos and I will put another photoblog entry together soon with some more interesting shots including some ocean shots I’m very pleased with. For now though, let me just say that this was a delicious holiday. I hope yours was too!
