This beautiful bandura was photographed at the Ottawa Folklore Centre while Jen was buying a ukulele.

Banduras were a symbol of Cossack and Ukrainian culture. Bandura songs often kept alive the old ways that were not appealing to Polish and later Russian authorities. Banduras were banned, and Bandurists were persecuted and killed for playing their instruments. Much so-called folk music in North America has become formalized and somewhat trite, but you only have to read Pete Seeger's biography to find out how provocative folk music has been in North America as well. It hasn't been so long since McCarthy, after all.
